In his time at Ascension, he has focused his efforts on roasting, sourcing, and the international trade of coffee. Starting as an apprentice under the guidance of Russell Hayward, the founder of Ascension, Alex was able to achieve the title of Head Roaster. He assists in all formulations, roasts and cuppings as the organization continuously improves its quality and our love of the bean. Alex is instrumental in daily coffee operations and equitable, sustainable green coffee sourcing. With the sudden closing of all Foxtrot locations in Dallas, coffee lovers are looking for a replacement. The “maximalist” space includes neon pink lighting, floral prints and a custom printed mural on the ceiling. The mix of outdoor, high-top and booth seating makes for a comfortable space to hang out, work or grab a quick beverage, caffeinated or otherwise, any time your day should require it. Leading the roastery is Jessica Keenan, formerly of Allegro Coffee. Jason Connelly is the new culinary director and recently was most recently executive sous chef at downtown’s historic Adolphus hotel. After a three-month hiatus to redesign its space, Ascension Coffee’s flagship location in the Design District has reopened. It’s doubled in size, taking over the former salon space next door, and launched a new evening dinner menu and brunch menu. Delving deeper into brunch and dinner is part of Ascension’s identity shift, as Schaffler and his team make the case that Ascension is different than the other coffee shops in town.
The menu includes staples such as brisket, ribs and sausage, as well as sides like green beans, jalapeno bacon coleslaw and potato salad. And most importantly, happy hour runs Mondays through Fridays from 4 pm to 7 pm with canned beers for $3 and crafts for $4. On my first visit, I stopped in for a to-go coffee and was in and out of there in less than 10 minutes. However, you’ll enjoy this aesthetically immaculate café best if you linger inside this one-of-a-kind caffeinated pleasure palace. Saddle up to the slow bar and enjoy a personally catered pour, or cozy up on one of the seats laid out in the open and inviting space.
